Michigan Breastfeeding Laws
Mothers in Michigan have the right to breastfeed in any public or private location they are legally allowed to be. The federal FLSA’s PUMP Act provides workplace lactation accommodation protections for all breastfeeding employees, but Michigan has no additional state-level lactation laws.

Mothers in Michigan have the right to breastfeed in any public place. In 2024 the law was amended to include the language “express human milk” to also cover pumping. Read the law: 2014 Mich. Pub. Acts, Act 197
MI Breastfeeding Laws: At Work
Unfortunately, Michigan doesn’t have any state legislation to protect and support breastfeeding in the workplace. But all breastfeeding employees in Michigan are protected by the FLSA’s PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act. Under this federal mandate, breastfeeding employees are entitled to reasonable break time and a private space (other than a bathroom) to pump at work for one year.

Breastfeeding mothers are exempt from indecent exposure laws and from jury duty (upon request).
